How to build a Professional Web Site is a very comprehensive, step-by-step Web Design/WebMaster "distance-learning" course. It is structured and offered to the wider Internet audience by Carlo Scodanibbio, international consultant and trainer, and replicates - identical in its content - the "real-world" program he has presented for many years at the University of Cape Town - South Africa.
If you wish to learn how to conceive, design, structure, publish, maintain, administer, update and promote a Web Site, this is the "Distance-Learning" course you have been waiting for!
It replicates - identical in its content - the program tested successfully for many years at the University of Cape Town - very successfully, according to participants' testimonials (see testimonials).
Wherever you live - with the timing that best suits you - in the comfort of your home or office - at a very competitive price - even without any previous web experience - and provided you have a computer, access to the internet and minimal computer literacy - this practical, "hands-on", "result-oriented" Course written without any complex computer jargon and delivered with an informal, relaxed tone will get you to a professional Web Designer and WebMaster status in no time. This course is designed to enable participants to start building a Web Page immediately and getting established on the Net (Basic Module: Lessons 1 - 10) - then to build up a professional structure and architecture of an Internet or Intranet Site (Intermediate Module: Lessons 11 - 20) - and then to perfect it with a stylish and "dynamic" touch and webmaster it conveniently (Advanced Module: Lessons 21 - 30).
The main objective of this course is to make participants well acquainted with the HTML and the XHTML languages, the universal Internet languages. You will learn basics and advanced concepts of the HTML language "the hard way", in order to understand adequately its mechanisms and, gradually, you will master HTML and XHTML, becoming a Professional Web Site Designer, capable of understanding thoroughly any secret of the Net and of building dynamic, interactive, traceable, useful and "usable" Web Sites filled with live content.
This course is designed for anybody interested in building professional Web Pages for whatever purpose (career, professional, commercial, scientific, social, cultural, hobby, personal, etc.). Business people, professionals, industry representatives, students and the general public will greatly benefit from taking this course.
This course will be of great benefit also to Web Designers presently using MS Frontpage or similar wysiwyg Web Editors (such as Dreamweaver, Page Mill, and the like).
By understanding HTML and XHTML they will learn how to "clean" properly their pages code, thus making it shorter (for faster downloads) and valid (compliant with the World Wide Web Consortium specifications).
Moreover, they will also receive the essential WebMaster principles and concepts necessary to every Web Designer to gain total control over their design work.
what is required to do this course
To take this course delegates should have sufficient computer literacy and know: Basics of Windows: 95/98 - 2000 - XP, NT, Vista - Basics of Web Browsing (MS Explorer or Mozilla Firefox or Netscape or Opera) - sufficient familiarity with E-Mail. That's all is required.
All the rest, including several tutorials for those who are not so familiar with certain Windows tools and techniques, will be provided in this course.Your platform should be preferably a Pentium or superior - with a minimum of 500 Mb RAM (1 Gb preferred) - at least 200 Mb of free Hard Disk space - VGA class or higher Graphic Card - Colour Monitor - "dial-up" or IDSN or ADSL or Wireless access to the Net - any Windows Operating System. A Browser (Microsoft Explorer 4.0 or higher - Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or higher - or others) must be loaded in your computer.
Finally, you must have your own E-Mail Address and an ISP (Internet Service Provider) to log onto the Net.
This Course is specifically designed for Windows people. However, Mac users may easily adapt all concepts and techniques to their platform (but no specific support is provided).
course formats and styles
This course is structured to be:
* very simple
* very practicalThis Course is based on the HTML 4.0 specifications taking into due consideration the impact of the XHTML 1.0 guidelines issued by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium - the "standardisation" organism of the Internet).
This Course is presently structured in three Modules:
- A Basic Module. This will bring you to the stage of publishing your own Web Site - having good, effective and functional features - on the Net.
- An Intermediate Module. This will allow you to give solid, professional features to your Web Site, including some interactivity and it will make you understand a lot of secrets of the Net.
- An Advanced Module. This will give you the final touches necessary to become a Professional Web Site Designer and WebMaster: creating dynamic Web Pages - beautifying them with artistic style - and achieving a "status" of total control and understanding of the present and future Internet.
Each of the 3 Modules consists of 10 Lessons (for a grand total of 30).
The majority of Lessons carry some Exercises that you can do as homework. The basic idea is that each step should be mastered before progressing to the next, thus the necessity of introducing homework. Solutions for most of the Exercises assigned in a Lesson are provided in the following Lesson.
This very comprehensive, step-by-step Course now comes to you in 2 different "distance-learning" formats:
1. "Traditional Format": with full tutor's back-up assistance
2. On a DIY ("do-it-yourself") basis
1 - THE TRADITIONAL FORMAT
In this format all Lessons (full Modules) are downloaded from the Net.
Participants who choose this format are entitled to submit exercises for marking and to receive full back-up assistance and guidance by e-mail, provided on a "one-to-one" basis by the Course leader.
Exercises come with the majority of Lessons.
Completed homework can be returned to Course Leader for marking at any time.
Homework guarantees adequate interaction between participant and course leader, always available to provide assistance and guidance to participants in their learning process (please allow 3 to 4 working days for marking Exercises).
Returning completed exercises for marking is not compulsory, though, but optional.
However, since checking participants' homework and supplying feed-backs and hints is a major benefit attached to this Course format, it is strongly recommended that completed exercises are submitted to Carlo for marking.
Another benefit of this Course format is that you have the possibility of asking Carlo for clarifications and further explanations: for instance, you may encounter some difficulties that have not been foreseen, or there might be a topic that is not very clear to you, etc. These things happen.
So, you may avail yourself of this added benefit, and submit your queries to Carlo by E-Mail. You may normally send one E-Mail per week, with which you submit your weekly homework for marking as well as your queries concerning the current Lesson. Your E-Mails will be answered personally by the Course Leader and all requested clarifications will be timely furnished - except in the case in which the query or the requested clarification concerns a Topic that will be dealt with in a forthcoming Lesson.
Unlike many other Courses available on the Net, this is not an "online" Course.Interaction is created by E-Mail: participants' homework and possible queries are returned to the Course Leader by E-Mail - Leader's comments are sent to participants by E-Mail - and so on.
Therefore a very high level of assistance and attention is provided individually to each participant, on a one-to-one basis. And there is no robotic tutor at the other end of the line, but a real, "human", experienced trainer, ready to provide all necessary assistance. In conclusion, the real and ultimate benefit of this Course in this format is in the strict interaction between student and tutor.
2 - THE DIY FORMAT
Participants who choose this format download all Lessons from the Net and study them on their own at the speed they choose.
As an alternative, the entire course can be purchased on a CD.
Since no back-up assistance and guidance is provided (except in very particular circumstances), this is obviously a very economical solution for those who are rather confident they can tackle this course with their computer literacy.
Whichever format you prefer, you may see online how real Lessons are structured: just click here to view Lessons 01 - 02 - 03 - 04 - 05.
You may also download the first five Lessons and save them in your computer by clicking here. You are free to keep them at no obligation.
